SUSTAINABILITY AT MARIENLYST
Carry joy
At Marienlyst Strandhotel, sustainability has been high on our agenda for many years, and with the BæreLyst sustainability program, our green efforts have been given a name and a direction. Here, sustainability is not just about rules and measurements, but about community and the desire to make a difference – together with colleagues, guests, and partners. We call our efforts BæreLyst because the desire to make a difference is what drives us. And with ESS Group behind us, we have both the strength and the direction to create sustainable solutions that work for both people and the planet.
BæreLyst – our shared path to sustainability
At Marienlyst Strandhotel, we believe that sustainable efforts can only succeed when we work together. That is why we have created BæreLyst, a joint initiative that combines our name with our desire to carry the effort forward. The sustainable efforts at MarienLYST are driven by LYST, where we BÆRER (carry) together and help our guests in the same direction on an opLYST (enlightened) basis. BæreLYST is about making sustainability work fun, exciting, and meaningful. We inform, involve, and activate colleagues across departments, thereby creating engagement and concrete results—and thus generating internal, lasting energy.
BæreLyst group
At Marienlyst, a BæreLyst group has been established with representatives from all relevant departments, working across the entire company and holding regular and ad hoc meetings when special initiatives require it. The BæreLyst group creates motivation and enthusiasm for working with sustainability, strengthens cooperation across departments, and ensures that the effort is anchored throughout the company. Here, all green ideas that are realistic to implement are gathered and contribute to developing and adapting the solutions we have already initiated.

Passion & People at the Center in 2025
By 2025, a number of initiatives will have been launched at Marienlyst that focus on passion, community, and the human side of sustainability.
Marienlyst now has its very own Sustainability Manager, who, in collaboration with the ESS Group, will ensure both progress and the integration of sustainability throughout the organization.
In 2025, our work will be guided by the concept of “BæreLyst”—the desire to take responsibility for one another, for our guests, and for the environment. Instead of viewing sustainability as a duty, Marienlyst approaches it with curiosity, a sense of community, and concrete actions in everyday life. This applies to operations, the kitchen, collaboration with suppliers, and interactions with guests.
A BæreLyst group has been established, comprising representatives from various departments, to ensure that sustainability efforts are embedded throughout the organization. At the same time, colleagues have been mobilized and engaged to an even greater extent, including through a sustainability channel on the intranet.
A detailed waste management plan has been adopted and its implementation has begun. In addition, several specific initiatives were launched in 2025, including the “Hot Meals” program, under which meals are prepared weekly for the local shelter.
The year concluded with Marienlyst providing an update on its efforts over the past year, as the hotel hosted 30 local businesses as part of Helsingør Municipality’s GoGreen Denmark network.
